‘Killing Gabba Maggie’ …a promise to murder

by J.A.Loggie

ISBN no.: 978-0- 9872122-7- 6

RRP: $AUD12.00

Release date: January 2016

On Saturday 31st October 1998 a sex-worker died in the inner Brisbane suburb of  Woolloongabba with her head inside a plastic bag. The media surmised that Halloween had activated a switch in a warped psyche but events are seldom what they seem in this smoke and mirror tale of murder and madness and the body count continued to rise. During the next ten months five more working girls die a breathless death and the name Bagman appears in the media but the murders may be the work of a new crime cartel that is intent on controlling the recently legalised sex-trade in the river city.

A CD filled with stolen cartel data falls into the hands of private investigator Mac McNab as he watches River Fire pyrotechnics at Southbank Parklands with his young grandson Paul.

Mac hides the CD before he is murdered by the cartel and days later the cartel kidnaps seven years old Paul who is soon rescued by Mac’s colleagues but the shadowy Bagman does exist and the serial killer is obsessed with single mother Cassie McNab and her son Paul. Murder and madness rise to a crescendo on Halloween night 1999 when Cassie is drugged and wakes in a bed beside a mummified corpse wearing green pyjamas.

The AHWA Flash Fiction & Short Story Competition is open to submissions from January 1 until May 31, 2016.

We want your best horror story, your very best. This is Australia’s leading unpublished horror fiction competition and our winning entries are always imaginative, engaging, well-written, and bloody scary. We need tales that frighten, yarns that unsettle us in our comfortable homes. All themes in horror will be accepted, from the supernatural classics (zombies, vampires, ghosts), to psychological roller-coaster rides, to the highly original. No previously published entries will be accepted – all tales must be an original work by the author.
– Cameron Trost, AHWA Competitions Coordinator

There are two categories for submission:Flash Fiction
Stories up to 1000 words in length. The winning author will receive paid publication in Midnight Echo, the magazine of the AHWA, and an engraved plaque.

Short Story
Stories with 1001 to 8000 words. The winning author will receive paid publication in Midnight Echo, the magazine of the AHWA, and an engraved plaque.

Peripheral Visions is a unique reference collection that includes all of acclaimed dark fantasy writer Robert Hood’s 44 ghost stories to date, three of them especially written for this volume. These memorable tales display Hood’s uncanny ability to make the fantastic real, to embrace weirdness and create human characters whose lives – both inner and outer – haunted by mortality, are laid bare and revealed to be our own worst nightmares. Ranging from melancholy reflection on life and death, through disquieting tales of dark humour and vengeance, to chilling visions of ghostly apocalypse. Hood’s stories are sure to draw you into a terrifying world that in the end is revealed to be irrefutably our own. Though many of these stories draw on the traditions of the past, they are far from traditional in approach. As you turn each page remember this: not everything here is as it seems. There’s always something more, barely glimpsed, out there on the periphery. In the single volume HC and ebook editions, each section has an evocative, disturbing illustration by noted artist, Nick Stathopoulos, who also designed the covers.

The dead rose quickly, and were soon unstoppable. Kentucky’s five million inhabitants were swiftly decimated. Those killed only returned to join the ranks of the dead, to seek out and kill the remaining survivors. It was a scenario repeated across the country. Whatever caused them to return was so fast that no one really new how, or why, it happened.

unnamedMadman Across The Water

Author: Caroline Angel

Published by: Staccato Publishing

ISBN no.: 978-1512288544

RRP: $16.99 US

Release date: 12th May 2015

Available at AmazonBook Depository, and Good Reads.

Following a curse several generations ago, a monster now inhabits the woods near a local town. Simon watched his friends get taken when he was just a child, and has spent has whole life searching for a way to rid his family of the deadly legacy that haunts them.

Battling his crippling fears and mental instability he must race against time to stop the creature as it takes innocent people, one after the other, tearing them to pieces, or even worse, leaving them as walking, broken corpses.

A creepy, suspensful saga of family, horror, and mystery, this is one story sure to leave you frightened of the woods at night, fog, and all things tall and slender!

Reviews:

  •  What an awesome read! Had me from the prologue. This is a suspenseful, creepy tale of the Internet legend of the slenderman, her told in a new light and with new facets. I was shocked, frightened, intrigued and completely taken in, I could not stop reading this book until I was at the last page.
  • Like another reviewer on here I, too, would like a sequel (anyone know if the author is writing one?)
  • I used to say Stephen King was my favorite horror writer, I can’t say that anymore! Caroline Angel has taken that spot!
  • Worth every single one of my five stars. Now I just have to figure out how to sleep tonight without nightmares!
  • I absolutely adored this story. It definitely had me turning the pages. Never having heard of the Slenderman before reading this, had me dying to find out more. This was a great introduction in the urban legend!
  • Great plot, everything was pieced together quite well. It was detailed but not overly so. I felt the fear the children, the parents, and the townsfolk had. This book let you feel the emotions and the terror from within. This is a story you might not want to read late at night with the lights off.
  • For a debut novel by this author, it was a good choice. I am waiting for whatever she throws out next.

518lDuFVQiL._SX392_BO1,204,203,200_Who’s Watching Samantha?

Author:  Lynette McClenaghan

Published by: Lynette McClenaghan

ISBN no.: 978-0-9875408-6-7 (kindle); 978-0-9875408-7-8 (epub)

RRP: AUD $4.99

Release date: March 31, 2015

Available HERE. Read an excerpt HERE.

How does clever and imaginative Samantha turn mean, wicked and dangerous? Horror sweeps in unleashing an entity that stirs hidden currents causing the Morrison family to implode, placing each member in danger. Samantha’s life is threatened from an unlikely source that wields an uncanny power over her and her family.

Soon the influence of this seemingly benign object and the power it wields over the child escalates conflict and mayhem which threatens Samantha and her family. And this is just the beginning of the horror that descends on them. Can the spell be broken?

Reviews:

  • The book is well paced, for a slow burning, slowly rising tension. Some revelations appear early, and some of the characters keep their experience secret longer than may have been expected, but these are minor issues, for which there are reasons. They are easily overlooked as the brisk pace sweeps you along and the pages keep turning. I was more than happy to suspend my disbelief and enjoy the ride, which is EXACTLY what a smart, interesting and most importantly nerve shredding horror, should deliver.  Above all though, when all the supernatural elements are stripped away, you are left with a far more chilling horror that will remain long after the lights are turned back on: The ease with which a child can find herself in danger, the ease with which trust can betrayed, and the consequences of a few seconds of distraction will echo around and make your nights sleepless long after you finish the book. Flaws do not get in the way of the story, or of the chills.

Set in Melbourne, In Jeopardy is a dark, dirty-realist tale of psychological drama and betrayal depicting Christine’s crisis. Other characters pulled into her world reveal that their lives are also struck by disruption, drama and loss threatening their sense of self. How do they navigate the chaos and randomness of modern day life? How do they respond to uncomfortable truths about themselves?

As character’s lives converge and diverge their separation and connectedness is revealed. Uncanny synchronicities heighten the precarious nature of the situation Christine is forced to face when Richard throws her out of his life.

Betrayal is a key theme and source of disturbance. Romance serves as a complication, but softens the novel’s pervasive grim tone. In Jeopardy is a dark tale and mood piece depicting the world as a forbidding place and touches of the supernatural enhance the story’s sense of randomness.

Even acts of kindness are eerie and warn that an individual’s life is on a knife’s edge, courting disaster and tragedy. Stories within stories mirror Christine’s plight.

Review:

  • Christine, the main protagonist of In Jeopardy, is cruelly ejected from her husband Richard’s life as the serial womanizer decides to permanently replace her with a new, more glamorous partner. On one level Christine must cope with her changed circumstances and her struggle to gain a fair settlement. More significantly, this event precipitates a series of crises in her life. She must come to terms with the obliteration of her identity as Richard’s wife and struggle to create a new identity out of the wreckage of her marriage and her dislocation from almost everything, except her work as a nurse, that has sustained her. Christine’s life is further complicated by her renewed relationships with her brother, returned from England, and her sister, married and living in Perth. Christine often seems powerless, drifting from situation to situation, yet throughout the novel she retains an elusive but discernible strength, particularly to face up to the harsh realities and confusion of her life. Christine’s story is paralleled by that of her bother, Julian, who reveals that he, too, has undergone some recent challenging experiences. His story, and that of his friend Lucy, embody similar struggles to Christine’s; although their stories share some common elements, each character deals with these in different ways and to different ends. In Jeopardy is quite a mood piece. The atmosphere is bleak – here the world is chaotic and unpredictable, often hostile. What emerges from this world of dark, dirty realism is hope, and faith in the capacity of some people to be decent, humane and compassionate. The battle to bring about meaningful change in oneself is compellingly portrayed.
