Lake Wunyami: Home of Haunted Spirits

Something scary resides in the township of Wunyami and it isn’t the gentle haunted spirits in beautiful Lake Wunyami that for many centuries have whispered encouragement and hope to the local Iindigenous Australians.

The European settlers who built Wunyami township in the early 1800s brought a demon with them and the evil that came with the white men has possessed and corrupted Wunyami

ever since and the scope for devilry is cosmic; a situation that delights the demon.

Inspector Samuel Steadman of the Queensland Police Service has taken long service leave to hunt the killer of his niece and the trail is taking him to Wunyami where something occult

and extremely nasty is waiting for him.

Marooned a thousand light years from home, alone with ghosts and monsters, the last thing she wanted was rescue.

Review

I have followed the Cy De Gerch stories for years, generally in Australian science fiction magazines. I’ve always liked the stories of this very young, purpose bred, Martian warrior, and her various travails, both physical and emotional. These stories continue in this novel, which length really gives author Kennett the chance to explore Lieutenant De Gerch’s psyche. It is a Robinson Crusoe-type story, with an unusual stand-in for Friday. There is conflict, adventure and introspection. Kennett is a good writer in both long and short form and deserves a wider audience. – NYC Reader

A lost friend. A family tragedy. A psychopathic scientist driven by greed.

All Shannon Dane wants to do is be with his girlfriend, Ally. So when tragedy strikes her family, he’s willing to do whatever she asks. Even break into Rat City, the run-down mansion owned by her geneticist uncle.

Ally is convinced the secrets hidden inside Rat City will give her the answers she’s desperate for, and reveal the truth behind her family’s loss. But what Shannon discovers could rip their lives– and the lives of a generation of teens – into shreds.

Rat City is a novel for young adults (13 years plus) that mixes science fiction, horror and a touch of romance with fast-paced action.

Reviews:

  • “Ree has captured high school life in Australia to a tee and used it as the backdrop for a gripping tale that throws adventure, mystery, science-fiction, and horror into the port (school bag for the uninitiated), leaves them to fester for a while, then invites you to peep inside.” – Cameron Trost

The Refuge Collection is a collection of dark, supernatural and terrifying tales set in and around the mythical town of Refuge, where every house is different, as are its people. They seek Refuge for all sorts of reasons, often without recalling why or how they arrived. But leaving is a different matter.

The town is often described by those who live there as ‘Heaven to Some, Hell to Others.’

The Refuge Collection is also a collection of award-winning (and emerging) writers and artists who’ve come together from across the world to build our little town of Refuge. Each writer has added to the places, people and events that take place, slowly building the mythology and adding to an insidious over-arching plot. With 6 volumes of 6 tales from Refuge, most are short, stand-alones but they all inter-leave in some way.

Reviews:

  • “The most ambitious shared-world horror series to come out of Australia. A horror collection that is both relevant and worthy – a rarity” – Aaron Sterns, co-writer of Wolf Creek 2
  • “The Refuge Collection benefits an admirable project. Please support if you can.” – Ramsey Campbell

Included is Lee Murray’s short story, ‘The Thief’s Tale,’ which won the Sir Julius Vogel (SJV) award for best short story in 2015.

No one in Willow Street pays it any notice, not the disgruntled Campbell family next door, not Alice Cowley and her suicidal daughter, or Mr. and Mrs. Markham down the road. Not even Darryl, the loner at number seventy, who is abnormal himself, thinks much about it. It is just the old Kemper House, forgotten and abandoned.

Until it makes itself known.

When the stench of death wafts from Kemper House through Willow Street, and comes to the attention of recent resident and newspaper reporter, Ben Traynor, it starts a chain of horrors that brings Kemper House’s curse into their own homes and leads others direct to its door. Kemper House not only haunts its neighbours, it infects them with an evil that traverses time and reality itself.
